2006 saw a further increase in the deployment of UN peacekeeping forces: at the end of the year, there were 80,368 troops, military observers and police in the field, 10,000 more than in 2005. Will the UN shortly face a crisis with this unprecedented demand? How should finite resources be best used? How can priorities be established? What is the linkage between military and civilian roles in international peace support operations? How can the transition from international peacekeepers to other actors be built in from the outset of operations? What is the sequencing, and who should do what? How should the UN work in partnership with regional organisations and others?
