With former South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki Moon taking over as UN Secretary-General in January 2007, the conference seeks to take stock, over the first six months of the new Secretary-General’s term of office, of ongoing developments in promoting UN management reform and system-wide coherence, issues which Ban Ki Moon has announced will be among his priorities. The conference also aims to examine how greater unity of purpose and confidence among member states can be promoted to increase the effectiveness of UN action, particularly when its authority is challenged.
